Why should I read the full article when I can read
A summary of the salient points, I don’t need
To have a detailed knowledge of this particular subject
Even if I read the whole article, I do not expect
To remember everything, so for the sake of efficiency
Let me forego the whole article and read a short summary
I do not have enough time to read in my day
To learn new things, reading summaries is the best way..
*
Or so I thought in the past, before the wisdom of age made me realize
That I would just skim the surface if I read salient points summarized
What’s more, I would actually be taxing my memory
If I tried to remember each point in the summary
Because memories are not formed in isolation
Details stick to memory through associations
*
Most articles or books worth reading do not merely state facts
They tell a well-constructed story, keeping the underlying theme intact
In reading thoroughly, both intellect and emotions come into play
Fact and storytelling merge cleverly in such a way
That the facts you are able to memorize
Whereas when you try to read just points summarized
There is no context for your memory, you are trying to learn by rote
Which is harder, more time to the exercise you need to devote
*
In my life, this principle I have consistently applied
To read articles and books in their entirety I have tried
While I do not recall most things I have read
The gist of those writings still stays in my head
