Fact vs. Fiction about a Medication

When I give my patients an opinion, I know I have to compete for their attention

With search engines, AI tools, social influencers with dubious intentions

Practicing evidence-based medicine is what I try to do

And the drug I am prescribing is supported by evidence too

Besides, beneficial effects of the medication I myself have seen

Over years of practice, therefore an advocate for this medication I’ve been

I debate divulging that I too take this medication

But decide against it, to avoid further aggravation

I’ve already lost the battle, it appears

Negative propaganda has already stoked their fears

If I am too forceful in advocating for the medication

It could be misconstrued as having a hidden motivation

So I try to tell them what the evidence suggests dispassionately

Hoping against hope that my reasoning they would be able to see

*

Later in the day, I search for the name of the medication

On social media platforms, and get instant confirmation

Of my doubts- unproven side effects are being talked about

On these platforms, they sound quite convincing without doubt

There are a few voices in support of the evidence as well

But they are not as loud or interesting, and do not compel

People to listen to their advice unlike those on the other side

I realize I am fighting a losing battle, at least I have tried..
