Myth of the Maverick

You may get lucky if you are bold

Thus the myth of the maverick is told

Success stories seem to be replete

With narratives of extraordinary feats

Achieved by folks who took a leap

Of faith, risk-takers who plunged deep

Into turbulent waters and obtained

Massive rewards, with minimal pain

*

These stories are inspiring, I agree

But may be misleading to some degree

You get motivated to throw

Caution to the winds and go

With a mindset towards risk-taking geared

You do not think it through, you cast aside your fear

You may strike gold but you would have to be

In real life, quite extraordinarily lucky

Without diligence, hard labor, practice intense

Success rarely graces us with its presence

*

By all means take a risk but not before

You have worked hard to perfect the elements core

Of anything you strive for excellence in

Serendipity is not the tool to help you win

There is no substitute for slow and steady progress

As the base recipe for lasting success

Thus do not fancy yourself to be a maverick

To tried and tested methods stick…
