In praise of libraries and bookstores

All the information that I need to procure

Is sourced from the internet for sure

Most of the time I simply assume

That Google is right, I naïvely consume

The information that is presented to me

That I am in an echo chamber I don’t even see

The internet knows thoroughly my interests

From political leanings to fashion trends I like best

My search for answers serves to confirm

My biases, my faith in my opinions it affirms

*

When I browse through the library or the bookstore

I may stumble across a subject I’ve not yet explored

Find a new idea, or discover a way different

To look at an issue contentious and relevant

The selection is not filtered to cater to me

Thus I can learn the way learning should be

*

If I want to expand my world-view

It is not just preferable, but crucial for me to

Browse the aisles of a physical place

Where the printed word takes up space

If a book or article contradicts

My opinion, it’s the one that I should pick

Confirmation bias is a danger real indeed

To recognize and avoid it is what I need

*

Let the crisp pages and bold prints inspire

Novel ideas, let me skills in critical thinking acquire

  1. I love this! Here in Florida, I hope that parents take their kids to the library and to the book stores to show them all that is out there. Sadly, I don’t know how our teachers are expected to teach with all the book restrictions DeSantis has placed on them. Our local library had a book sale this weekend–you had better believe I loaded up!

    1. I had written a poem with similar sentiment a while ago when I heard about the book bans in Florida. We need ALL kinds of books, that we can browse without filters! Anyway, I promptly drove to the library after writing this (at my local library now)

      1. Exactly. Hiding it from the kids? Hiding what? They want Florida kids going out into the world knowing nothing or hearing about something from the wrong people? This is nuts. Yay for public libraries!

  2. Having grown up without access to public libraries, I can see that the public library system is one of the best things about living in the US. Many Americans probably have no idea how blessed they are to have such great and free access to books. Without a public library, children are pretty much limited to reading what is required/ recommended by others (adults with their biased perceptions)
