National Napping Day

Today is the day after the clocks turn back

When we are trying to make up for the lack

Of an hour of sleep, it carries the designation

Of “National Napping Day”, the implication

Is that anyone who feels the need

To take a mid-day nap should do so indeed

This day has been created to emphasize

The benefit of rest and to de-stigmatize

Taking a nap or a siesta, often associated

With laziness in a culture where relentless productivity is celebrated

The day has been chosen because this is the day

When Americans feel the most sleep-deprived anyway

*

Just because it is labeled such does not mean

That most of us get to nap mid-day, it is seen

As a personal weakness if we try to rest

So we keep hustling harder, because that’s what we do best

*

But for those who can take a nap, we must do so today

Just by sleeping we can celebrate this day
