On wildfires in the south

The sky is hazy, the air quality dismal

The fires rage, their spread abysmal

Homes lost, lives disrupted

Curfews enforced, plans interrupted

The humidity generally considered oppressive

Has evaporated, there has been drought progressive..

*

“Flames are ripping across swamps and bays”

This is what a news article says

What should be an oxymoron is tragically true

The blaze is expanding through wetlands too

*

The destructive hurricane Helene eighteen months ago

Left fallen trees in its wake, with the humidity being low

There is plenty of wood debris to burn

One climate disaster fuels another, is what we have come to learn..

*

Now officials and firefighters are hoping for rain

So that these destructive fires can be contained

There is a sad irony that we are waiting for the weather Gods to bestow

Their blessings on us, after we’ve done everything we know..

(As of this writing, wildfires are blazing through southern Georgia and Florida.)
