A Tale of Conservation

A heartwarming story of conservation I just came across

In a world where biodiversity is facing accelerated loss

A tribe from the Pacific Northwest is using their skills and ingenuity

To save Chinook salmons from being lost in perpetuity

*

The Stillaguamish Tribe from the state of Washington

Have been buying riverfront farmland on their territory to preserve Chinook Salmon

They remove levees to convert farmland into wetland where the salmon can thrive

With these measures, their traditional livelihood and the fish, both can survive

*

These salmon have been driven to near-extinction

Over decades of systematic environmental destruction

Restoring their habitats is the first step in keeping them from perishing altogether

These marshy areas are where the salmon gather

*

Unfortunately things are never as simple as they appear

There is a bitter conflict at play here-

Whether to farm the land with levees or to let salmon grow

There are people in both groups, with compelling arguments to show

*

No species should face extinction due to human greed

I firmly believe this, and therefore I think we need

More communities to step up to preserve our planet’s incredible biodiversity

Save our flora and fauna from human-made adversity
