Performative No More

While most of us have in some way or the other become

Performative in our lives for social media, there are some

People amongst us who do not post

The highlights of their lives, they coast

Through life without shouting for attention online

I admire them, and wish that trait could be mine..

*

My craving for attention social media predates

To perform before others a deep-seated desire satiates

Now that performance has largely moved online

Through my engagement with social media, my persona I have tried to define

*

More recently in the opposite direction I’ve begun to move

Social media is not where I wish to prove

My skills or competence, therefore I refrain

From sharing accomplishments in my professional domain

My travel pictures I still like to showcase

I can’t help sharing that I’ve been to a new place

My attempts at art I do like to show

That I am creative, I want people to know..

And of course I write with the specific intent

Of posting on a blog, that reflects my desire ardent

To write something that people would like to read

Other than that, I’m trying to get away from the compulsive need

To post every highlight of my life and give the illusion

That my life is perfect- a decidedly fallacious conclusion

*

In a world where lives appear increasingly performative

A more private, but authentic life I am now trying to live
