Performative Reading

I read an article with a title rather provocative

It was about reading that has become performative

In the contemporary world where everyone engages

In scrolling on social media, to be engrossed in the pages

Of a physical book is perceived as something that sets one apart

An aura of intelligence to the reader it automatically imparts

You see people posting pictures from their vacation

With a book in hand, in an obvious demonstration

Of their interest in reading, of their tastes refined

To let others know that they read books to relax and unwind

There has also been a proliferation of book clubs everywhere

Where opinions on a book members share

Book clubs have been by media personalities popularized

This is one instance of reading being stylized

*

Although for me reading is a private affair

If reading is performative for some, I do not care

Even if someone is reading just to be perceived a certain way

Reading a book is preferable to not reading, any day

Someone could start off with performative reading but then acquire

A genuine interest in reading, a deepening desire

To read more books because reading feels good

And not read just because they think they should
