Learning in middle age

There is so much for me to learn, but my mind

Has a shrinking capacity, I find

That despite my abundant curiosity

Imbibing new information is daunting for me

My brain needs more time to process

Any new information, and I retain even less

The world is changing quite rapidly

Retirement in the near future I do not foresee

I have to find a way such that I can trick

My brain into learning things faster, and to make them stick

*

More patient with myself I must learn to be

And come to terms with the reality

That it takes twice as long to learn new things now

And if I am serious about learning I have to allow

Myself to spend more time, and not rush things through

What I could do in my twenties I can no longer do..

*

So here I am, struggling to study for a test

I read more slowly and need longer breaks to rest

But I am grateful that I practice a vocation

Where life-long learning is the expectation

These days, when I grasp something completely new

The sense of accomplishment is greater too..
