Middle-aged

Being in your forties is confusing, I must say

My body gives me mixed signals every day

One moment, fueled by a burst of energy, a hill I climb

The next moment, my knees protest at the downward incline

My progressive glasses make me dizzy as I balance vision distance and near

One moment I feel invincible, the next moment I am gripped by fear

That the inexorable signs of aging are knocking on my door

I can no longer be as agile as I was before

Some days I look at myself in the mirror and see

A bright-eyed young woman peering back at me

Some days the mirror appears to only display

Puffy eyes, facial wrinkles, hair strands that are grey

There are days that give me a glimpse of the past

And days that tell me that old age is catching up fast

This confusion is a sign of middle age, I think

That I am not a spring chicken has taken some time to
