Confessions of a compulsive interrupter

I have something embarrassing to confess

I interrupt conversations out of fear of being unable to express

My opinion, which I really want people to know

I am always rather impatient to show

That I have a voice that I am not shy to use

Any chance to make myself heard I do not want to lose

*

Unfortunately I have only rather recently become aware

That instead of listening, I am formulating the viewpoint that I want to share

And in my impatience, I interrupt before people have had a chance to complete

What they are saying, admittedly this behavior I tend to repeat

*

As a petite woman, I often feel rather small

I’m afraid of going unnoticed if I say nothing at all

But I seem to lack the emotional intelligence to understand

When to say my part, so my words land

At moments that are obviously inappropriate

I end up speaking too early because I do not want to be too late..

*

The silver lining here is that at least my shortcoming I have found

Now I have an opportunity to turn my behavior around

I must learn to listen uninterrupted, even if I lose

The chance to chime in, listening over speaking out of turn I should choose
