Handle (writing) with Care

There are many thoughts that in my writing I want to express

But before shaping them into words I go through the process

Of running them through a filter in my mind

And if the slightest whiff of controversy I find

The thought never gets shaped into anything more

Sensitive topics I am trying not to explore

Since I post my writing publicly, I am paranoid

Anything that can land me in trouble I try to avoid

Though I am not well-known, the cancel culture of today

Can affect anyone, anytime in an unexpected way

*

Injustices in the world I closely observe

The opinions I form I usually reserve

For expression before people with whose views

I am already familiar- in a public setting I choose

My words with progressively increasing care

The world wide web never forgets, I am aware

*

Sometimes when I sit down to write, it is hard to replace

A controversial idea with something more innocuous, I face

An obstacle created purely out of fear

A writer’s block that unnecessary appears

*

Of course, I was going to write about something that could be

Interpreted in a different manner entirely

As I try to replace that thought in my mind

This was the only subject I could find

So I am writing about not writing about what I mean to

To not ruffle any feathers, this is what I have to do
