Another long weekend, another round of sales
This strategy to make people buy more stuff never fails
To lure me into its trap, in a direct or indirect way
I start out by reminding myself I don’t need anything, but at the end of a long day
Feeling depleted, I talk myself into believing that I deserve
To buy something new, I don’t need to conserve
My resources to such an extent that I cannot treat
Myself to some retail therapy so that the blues I can beat
*
As I start checking out the sales that are quite attractive
My concern for overconsumption suddenly becomes active
I should not add to landfills by buying fashion that is fast
Maybe I should buy something that can for a long time last
Perhaps I should look at home decor, but I remember I cannot
Adequately care for the stuff that I have, so I let go of this thought
I check out clothing, shoes, jewelry online, a frisson of guilt running through me
I really don’t need more material possessions, obviously
*
I still want to buy something, the sales have a vice-grip on me
So I decide to buy stuff that helps me build my hobby
I buy more art supplies, feeling satisfied at this compromise-
(One can debate whether buying excessive art supplies is wise
Given that paints run dry when they are not used)
I am happy that I have finally been able to choose
Something that helps me not just consume, but create
Eagerly for my package to be delivered I wait
