The Process and the Outcome

At the end of a long, stressful day, in order to decompress

I decided to dabble in art, thinking creative expression was the best way to beat stress

Given the paucity of time, I decided my project needed to be

A small-scale one, something quick and easy

*

I picked a small canvas and began to draw

From the beginning, my proportions were flawed

Then the colors did not mix as well as I expected them to

Getting the desirable outcome was something I could not do

The artwork looked like a botched amateurish attempt

It did not de-stress me, unlike the original intent

*

I wanted to keep going, an easier inspiration piece I picked out

That this one would turn out well, I did not for a moment doubt

But midway through the process, I realized that was not the case

A mediocre piece of art had by a worse one been replaced

*

I was really hoping that practicing art would be

The ultimate way to de-stress for me

But somehow nothing worked right, my hopes were dashed

In a dark corner of my studio my unsightly artwork I stashed

*

After fretting over my poor results I realized that the actual process

Of creating art was the key to reducing my stress

I had been focusing on the outcome instead

Adding to the pent-up frustration in my head
