Lost in a Book

There are many chores that need to be done

Begging completion is the work that was this morning begun

There is dinner that needs to be prepared and served

Despite all these demands on my time, I have not swerved

My attention from reading the book I have in hand

My relationship with books, you must understand

Is one of dependence to a high degree

If a book captivates me, I am only set free

After the last page has been turned

Only then to the practical realm I return

*

Of course I find time to read in my day

It is everything else to which attention I do not pay

A good book is always a good excuse

That to shirk my responsibilities I can choose

Engrossed in a book I can ignore easily

All the noise, the gossip, the chatter around me

  1. I just finished Theo of Golden by Allen Levi. My neighbor loaned it to me. I returned it to her, and we stood by the fence talking about the characters in the book like they were actual people we knew. The power of a good book cannot be beat.

      1. Yes! His characters are wonderful. I think that is such a testament to good writing when you feel deeply about the people in such a personal way.
