I read a provocative article on how therapists are increasingly recommending
Estrangement from parents, effectively ending
Almost all communication as a means of prioritizing self-care
After decades of advising people to focus on repair
Of relationships gone sour, now the focus has changed
Any suggestion of trauma is considered a good reason to get estranged
From family including parents- but in what world can completely cutting ties
With your own parents be considered wise?
*
Criticism by parents framed as abuse
Strict parenting labeled as traumatic, encouraging offsprings to choose
Complete estrangement from the family in which they were raised
I wonder why one should not give their parents more grace?
*
In a world plagued increasingly by loneliness
Isolation from loved ones cannot be the best way to relieve emotional distress
If firm boundaries were established without cutting contact
If harmful patterns of behavior were discarded, and channels ot communication left intact
That would help one heal from childhood trauma without inflicting pain
Let the door between parents and their children open remain
